Cub Scouts & families

Mom and Me

One night at camp, together. For a lot of families this is the first time either of them has slept in a tent — and that is exactly who the weekend is designed for.

Dates and registration are on the council calendar.

Who it's for

Cub Scout-age children and their moms — or grandmother, aunt, or whichever adult woman in a child's life wants to be the one who takes them. No camping experience is assumed or required.

What you'll do

A weekend built around doing things together rather than dropping a child off at a station:

  • Fishing and the waterfront on Lake Murvaul
  • BB guns and archery, at Cub-appropriate ranges
  • Crafts and nature
  • Cooking out
  • A campfire with skits and songs
  • A night in a tent, which is the part they will talk about

If you have never camped before

That is the point. Nobody expects you to arrive with the right gear or know how any of it works. Camp staff and experienced volunteers are there the whole weekend, and every family around you is somewhere on the same learning curve. Come anyway.

What to bring

  • Tent, or ask about available camp accommodations when you register
  • Sleeping bags and ground pads for both of you
  • Closed-toe shoes, and a second pair that can get wet
  • Layers — October evenings in East Texas cool off fast
  • Rain gear
  • Flashlight for each person
  • Insect repellent, sunscreen, refillable water bottles
  • A camera

Cost

The fee covers both of you and is published with the event on the council calendar.
